Boulder Train Accident Attorney

Boulder Train Accident Attorneys at Cederberg LawAlthough trains are not necessarily the primary form of transportation that most commuters rely upon when going to work or getting around in their daily lives, trains:

  • Are still commonly used to transport commodities, including dangerous and flammable chemicals, and large freight across the U.S.
  • Provide passenger service through Colorado.
  • Can unfortunately be involved in serious accidents that can injure or even kill train employees, train passengers or others in the vicinity of the accident.
  • Light rail is expanding in the Denver metro area.

When such train accidents occur and are caused by the negligence or reckless behavior of any individual or party (such as a train engineer, a train company and/or the company that manufactured the train’s equipment), those who have been injured in the accident:

  • Will likely have a personal injury claim against the negligent parties
  • Can obtain compensation for their injuries and losses by working with an experienced lawyer who can help them build a train accident lawsuit.

Train Accident Statistics

The following train accident statistics, which have been compiled and presented by the Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Safety Analysis, can shed light on the prevalence of train accidents in the U.S. in 2013:

  • There were more than 6, 300 train accidents in the U.S. during the first six months of 2013 (the most recent time frame for which statistics are available).
  • While more than 7 percent of these incidents involved fatal train accidents (and resulted in 462 deaths), 4,635 individuals were reportedly injured as a result of train accidents.
  • Approximately 37 percent of all train accidents that have occurred in 2013 have been caused by some type of human error (which can include, for example, mistakes made by engineers or other train employees, mistakes or negligent behavior associated with drivers of passenger vehicles, etc.). This makes human error the leading cause of train accidents.
  • More than 32 percent of all train accidents in 2013 have been caused, at least in part, by track defects – such as corrosion of the track, problems with track seams and/or bolt holes, traverse fissures, cracking of the gauge corners, etc.
  • Train equipment defects have caused more than 12 percent of all train accidents in 2013.
  • More than 95 percent of all train accidents involve trespassing and/or highway-rail accidents, meaning that the train accident occurs at a location where a highway user (e.g., a driver, motorcyclist, pedestrian, etc.) comes into contact with a train at a crossing site.
