Traffic-Related Deaths Up 4% in 2015, NHTSA Announce

From 2014 to 2015, there has been a remarkable spike in traffic accident deaths in the U.S., according to the latest reports from regulators at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In fact, based on an analysis of preliminary data for the first six months of 2015, the traffic-related fatality rate has increased by about 4.4 percent and the rate of fatal motor vehicles in the U.S. has increased by more than 8 percent.

While this jump from last year’s numbers is subject to change as the preliminary data have been characterized as “volatile,” these initial findings threaten to upset a nearly decade-long trend of declining roadway fatalities in the U.S.

And this has been a “call to action” for NHTSA officials, as U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx has explained, “to reinvigorate the fight against deadly behavior on America’s roadways.”

Regulators Focus on ‘Behavioral Programs,’ Crash Prevention Technologies to Stop the Deadly Trend

In working to reverse the deadly trend and promote safe traveling on America’s roadways, the NHTSA has noted that it has “launched a series of safety initiatives in recent months” as part of its safety mission. Among some of the efforts federal officials are working on include:

  • Facilitating technological innovations to enhance safety and fight drowsy driving
  • Holding “a series of cross-cutting regional meetings across the country early next year” in order to “gather ideas, engage new partners, and generate additional approaches to combat human behavior issues that contribute to road deaths”
  • Developing their own anti-drunk driving program, the DADDS program, to end the deadly practice of impaired driving
  • Joining forces with state and local leaders to enhance safety regulations and the enforcement of them.
