Final Tips for Making Tire Maintenance a Habit…
Tip 4 – Rotate Your Tires.
Not all of the tires on a vehicle will wear evenly, as their position on the car can make them more susceptible to wearing down faster. However, by rotating the position of the tires, you can prolong the life of the tires by helping them to wear more evenly. With this step of tire maintenance, it’s important to point out that:
- You should defer to the vehicle’s owners’ manual for guidance as to how often the tires should be rotated (however, a good rule of thumb is that tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles).
- Rotating your vehicle’s tires may NOT be a good idea of the tires on your vehicle are different sizes. So, again, defer to the owner’s manual for direction.
Tip 5 – Stay on Top of Tire Recalls.
If you become aware that a tire manufacturer has issued a recall on tires that you may have on your vehicle (because, for instance, the manufacturer directly alerts you or you hear news about the recall from some other source), then make sure you comply with the directions for repair or replacement of the tires. In other words, don’t drive around on recalled tires, as you can be putting yourself at risk of tire blowouts, tire failure and car accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has programs that can immediately alert you about tire recalls (as well as recalls for other vehicle equipment), so signing up for one of these alerts can be the best way to stay abreast of the latest tire recalls as soon as they are issued.
