Many Boulder citizens are complaining that the City of Boulder was negligent in its responsibility to clear the roads after this weekend’s massive storm.

This weekend’s storm has left many of Boulder’s roadways snowy and icy, with a number of citizens complaining that the city of Boulder dropped the ball when it came to clearing the roads and making them safe for travel. In fact, according to many citizens, main streets in Boulder – including Baseline Road, Arapahoe, Broadway and 28th Street – hadn’t been plowed in a timely manner and, as a result were left icy and snowy, creating conditions that some have deemed treacherous.

The City’s Response

In response to allegations that the Boulder Transportation Department has not been effective at or diligent about removing the snow from Boulder’s roadways, spokesman Nick Grossman has stated that the City deployed all of its 16 plows to start clearing the streets at around 3am Saturday morning. However, the fact that the storm brought about 11.5 inches of snow when only about 4 inches were predicted was what created the problem – not the City’s negligence in removing the snow.

Additionally, Grossman pointed out the fact that the freezing and windy conditions compounded the issue because they made it more difficult to effectively use de-icer and sand on the roads (due to the fact that the de-icer ended up freezing and the sand was blown away by the winds).

It’s no secret that icy and snowy roadways are proverbial hotbeds for the dangerous conditions that can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles and get into serious car accidents. In the event that such conditions could have been prevented through more diligent action on behalf of the City of Boulder’s Transportation Department – and such conditions were to blame for a car accident, accident victims may have a claim against the City and may be able to obtain compensation for their injuries and losses by filing a car accident lawsuit.
