With children across the U.S. brimming with excitement for this evening’s Halloween celebrations, it’s a good time to highlight some Halloween safety tips from the National Safety Council (NSC) to ensure your children are safe as they celebrate Halloween this (and every) year. Here’s what NSC officials are encouraging parents and older children to do to keep young children safe:
-
Here are some Halloween safety tips to keep you and your children safe while you celebrate Halloween this – and every – year!
Make sure that children who are younger than 12 years old are accompanied by at least one responsible adult for trick or treating festivities.
- Go over some essential traffic safety procedures with younger children. Especially important to go over is looking both ways before crossing the street and not crossing if a driver doesn’t see them.
- If children will be out after the sun goes down, make sure that at least part of their costumes (or part of their treat bags) contains some type of reflectors or reflective tape so that these children are visible to drivers.
- If you or a teen child will be driving on Halloween, make sure that you/your teen driver is alert to children, drives more slowly and does not get behind the wheel after having consumed any alcohol.
- Never let children enter strangers’ homes, and never let them start eating collected Halloween candy before a responsible adult has inspected it.
As Deborah A.P. Hersman, NSC president and CEO, has explained, “Halloween is a fun and exciting time for children and parents alike… parents can really make a difference in keeping their kids safe by enforcing guidelines and giving them the confidence to make smart decisions.”
Share these Halloween safety tips with your friends and family members to promote fun and safe Halloween celebrations for everyone this year!
