The truck driver who allegedly caused the fatal truck accident that killed one person and seriously injured comedian and actor Tracy Morgan had reportedly been awake for more than 24 consecutive hours prior to the accident, according to the court documents in this case.

Fatal truck accident that seriously injured comedian Tracy Morgan was caused by a trucker who had been awake for more than 24 consecutive hours prior to the accident.
This accident, which occurred at around 1 a.m. this past Saturday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike, killed a man in addition to critically injured several others and has led to the truck driver of the Walmart semi being officially charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.
Details of the Accident – Truck Driver Fatigue Likely To Blame
Investigators in this case have explained that this fatal truck accident occurred when a limo bus carrying Morgan and a group of others was hit by the Walmart tractor-trailer. Although there had been clear indications that traffic had been slowing down, as was observed by the driver of the limo bus, the truck driver seemed to miss these cues and reportedly only saw them at the last minute. By the time, it was too late.
Despite the fact that the trucker had attempted to sharply turn the truck to try to avoid the collision, he was unsuccessful and ended up:
- Hitting the limo bus and causing it to rollover
- Causing a multi-car collision (None of the motorists or occupants of the other vehicles in this fatal truck accident were reportedly injured).
At this time, investigators are still looking into whether the negligent truck driver may have been intoxicated at the time of the accident. Whether or not he was drunk or under the influence of drugs, however, there seem to be clear indications that this commercial driver:
- Had been affected by driver fatigue (which has been found to be as debilitating as driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.10 after 24 hours of no sleep, according to some researchers)
- Had violated federal hours-of-service regulations.
As Bill Simon, the CEO of Walmart has stated, “This is a tragedy, and we are profoundly sorry that one of our trucks was involved… the facts are continuing to unfold. If it’s determined that our truck caused the accident, Walmart will take full responsibility.”
