Just as driver negligence is a common causal factor in traffic accidents in general, it also tends to contribute to rear-end collisions, particularly when motorists are:

  • Drunk or under the influence of drugs – Such impairments will negatively impact drivers’ judgment, perception and reaction times, all of which can increase the risk that rear-end collisions will occur.
  • Distracted – In fact, distracted driving (as we noted in a previous blog series) can end up being just as dangerous and deadly as drunk or drugged driving, as it creates similar impairments for motorists.
  • Fatigued – Although driver fatigue tends to be a bigger concern for commercial motorists (like truck drivers), it can impact any motorist – and it can cause impairments similar to those displayed by drunk drivers.
  • Defiant of traffic laws – In some cases, drivers will simply choose not to comply with traffic laws. For instance, when motorists tailgate others, fail to proceed at yellow or green lights, etc., such actions can also sharply increase the chances that a rear-end car accident will happen.

We also want to note, however, that driver negligence is not the only type of negligence that may contribute to rear-end car accidents. The negligence of various other parties – such as automakers, road maintenance crews, etc. – may also lead to these (and other) collisions.

4 – Red light cameras at intersections can increase the risk of rear-end accidents.

This may be one of the more interesting and less obvious facts about rear-end car accidents, as red light cameras may be considered to be safety/law enforcement tools. However, various studies have analyzed the correlation between the presence of red light cameras and the incidence of traffic accidents, finding that the risk of rear-end collisions can increase between 20 and 100 percent when red light cameras are present at intersections.

As researchers have found, just some of the reasons for this include that, when red light cameras are present, they can:

  • Be another distraction for drivers, impacting their perception and/or response times
  • Cause motorists to change their driving behaviors by, for instance, stopping at yellow lights (rather than proceeding through them).

It’s important to also point out here that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has found that:

  • The incidence of collisions tends to generally increase when new intersections and/or features at intersections are installed.
  • While the incidence of rear-end collisions does tend to increase at intersections where red light cameras are installed, the incidence of more serious traffic accidents (including right-angle crashes) tends to sharply decrease when such cameras are present.

Be sure to check out the upcoming conclusion to this blog series for a few more essential facts about rear-end car accidents.
