Earlier this month, officials with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) announced that they will be making $30 million available via state grants as part of their effort to help states:
- Modernize their technological infrastructures related to vehicle safety
- Better disseminate real-time safety information to law enforcement officials and roadside inspectors.
As FMCSA Acting Administrator Scott Darling has explained in relation to these grants:
FMCSA has long embraced the latest technology in pursuit of our mission reducing the number and the severity of crashes involving large trucks and buses… with advanced, real-time data tools, roadside inspectors are able to prioritize carriers for detail inspections based upon their past performance, while assisting law enforcement officers conducting on-scene crash investigations. The value of these technological tools cannot be overstated.
FMCSA State Grants Will Be Available through Two State Programs

$30 million in FMCSA state grants is intended to help states improve their safety technologies for commercial vehicles and, in doing so, reduce the incidence of truck accidents.
States looking to get a portion of the available grant money will have until February 2, 2015 to apply for either or both of the following programs:
- Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) – This program has up to $25 million to award to states to improve their technological systems and applications for commercial vehicles. Part of the goal of this program is to increase enforcement on “high-risk” operations and to improve the efficiency of screening commercial vehicles.
- Performance Registration Information Systems Management (PRISM) – Up to $5 million will be available through this program, which is focused on promoting the further national integration of states’ commercial motor vehicle registration and licensing systems.
Grant winners are expected to be announced by the FMCSA by spring of 2015.
